According to the announcement of NS (the Dutch railway network or Nederlandse Spoorwegen) since January 1st, 2017 every electric train that runs on the Dutch railway routes is powered by wind energy!

In the Netherlands, taking drinks onboard is allowed, but please keep in mind that the majority of trains have special rules regarding alcoholic beverages. Moreover, you should know that almost all trains operating on the Dutch railways have a restaurant car where passengers can buy some food and drinks.

Wondering how to travel by train in the Netherlands? The first and most important tip: be punctual, as the train won't wait up for you if you're late. Make sure to arrive at the station at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time. Also, don't forget to print your ticket out or at least have the E-version on your mobile phone as you'll be asked to show it while getting on board the train. And the last tip: we recommend not to leave your luggage, especially the items of value, unattended to avoid petty theft.
